La Fiere - Ferme Manoir

After passing through Sainte Mere Eglise, the first liberated village of World War II, June 6th 1944, not only famous for being the first freed village it also has an incredible story attached to the steeple, involving a dangling US paratrooper as portrayed in the film, "The Longest Day", there are many points of interest within this quaint town.

But a short distance after Sainte Mere Eglise you will arrive at "La Fiere", although Sainte Mere Eglise is seen by many as the historical landing site of the Paratroopers it is actually the area of "La Fiere". The 505th Parachutist Infantry Regiment of the 82nd Airborne Division jumped on the drop zone O, in the night of 5-6 June 1944, and moved toward the objective : the hamlet of La Fière, where they eventually won the battle for the strategic bridge across the river Merderet. This all happened on the doorstep of this historic manoir. Interesting account of the battle, written by Company Commander at the following link. www.thedropzone.org/europe/Normandy/dolan.html
